Drain cleaning Berlin: blocked drains cleared fast
A blocked drain usually starts harmlessly: the water drains more slowly, it gurgles, it smells. At some point nothing goes down at all. Drain, toilet or main drain blocked: we refer a plumber who clears the pipe with a drain snake, high-pressure jetting or a camera.
Typical cases
When a plunger and hot water no longer help, the blockage is usually deeper in the pipe. Then you need the right tools and experience.
- Water drains slowly or not at all
- Toilet blocked or overflowing
- Gurgling in the drain
- Unpleasant smell from the drain
- Water pushing up into the shower or bathtub
- Backflow in the basement or floor drain
What you can do now
- 1Don't let more water runStop using the affected drain and, if possible, the drains above it.
- 2No harsh chemicalsChemical drain cleaners attack old pipes and seals and are dangerous if work is done afterwards.
- 3Ask the neighboursIn an apartment building: if others have the same problem, the blockage is probably in the shared pipe.
- 4Call usDescribe which drains are affected. That helps the plumber bring the right tools.
Smell gas? Call 112 or your gas network operator's emergency service immediately. Leave the flat and do not use any switches.
How pipes are cleaned
Drain snake
A rotating spiral breaks up blockages in washbasins, showers, toilets and smaller pipes.
High-pressure jetting
Water at high pressure flushes grease, limescale and deposits out of larger pipes, for example soil stacks and main drains.
Camera inspection
A camera inside the pipe shows where the blockage is and whether the pipe is damaged, for example by roots or cracks.
Where is the blockage?
The wider the pipe (DN = nominal diameter in mm), the deeper inside the building the problem usually is.
| Drain | Pipe | Typical cause |
|---|---|---|
| Washbasin, bidet | DN 40 | Hair, soap, toothpaste |
| Shower, bathtub | DN 40–50 | Hair, soap residue |
| Kitchen sink, dishwasher | DN 50 | Grease, food scraps, coffee grounds |
| Toilet | DN 100 | Wet wipes, hygiene products, too much paper |
| Soil stack in the building | DN 100 | Deposits from several flats |
| Main drain to the sewer | DN 100–150 | Roots, sagging pipes, grease |

Frequently asked questions
What causes most blockages?
In the kitchen it is grease and food scraps, in the bathroom hair and soap residue, in the toilet wet wipes, hygiene products and too much paper. In main drains, roots and sagging pipes are added to that.
Can I clear the blockage myself?
Minor blockages in a washbasin can often be cleared with a plunger or by cleaning the trap. If that doesn't help or several drains are affected, it is better to call a professional.
How much does drain cleaning cost?
That depends on where the blockage is and which method is needed. Our enquiry and referral are free. You agree the price directly with the plumber before work starts.
How can I prevent new blockages?
No grease in the sink, hair strainers in the shower and bath, no wet wipes in the toilet. With older pipes, regular cleaning can make sense.
